Event Preview - Saturday, July 10, 2010 from 2.30 p.m.
By Mark B. Oliver | July 23, 2010
The proceedings commence at 3:30PM when amateur and professional musicians and bands will pick up their fiddles, mandolins, banjos and guitars to perform for a crowd of up to 3,000 people.
All the proceeds benefit the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department and co-chair Kenny Murphy, a volunteer fireman, is excited about this year’s event. “The event draws a very large crowd, where all of the family, can enjoy the terrific location, hopefully enjoy great weather and listen to a wide range of wonderful music.”
The event is the main fundraiser for the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department with all proceeds being invested in much needed equipment and training.
Now in its 36th year, the event has grown to be the largest in the North East Hills and draws from far and wide.
Contestants can register beginning at 3PM and are judged in the following categories: old time fiddle, old time banjo, mandolin, trick and fancy fiddle, finger pick guitar, flat pick guitar, bluegrass banjo, and a band playoff. Bands play between the various categories.
Due to the nature of the event no electric instruments are allowed and dogs cannot be catered for.
Beyond the music, the festivities include a playground, craft vendors and food booths.
