The exhibit introduces visitors to the newly published children’s book of the same name by Mary Higgins, with stunning artwork by Wendell Minor.

The Magical Christmas Horse is set in the historic 1746 Averill Farm in Washington, Connecticut, and the Gunn Museum’s very own toy horse was the inspiration behind this delightful Christmas story.

Johnny and his family will be visiting his grandparents for Christmas, who live in an old house in New England.   Johnny promises his younger brother Liam that among the many wonders to be found at their grandparent's home is an amazing wooden horse.   Johnny promises Liam that this will be Liam's best Christmas ever.

When exploring his grandparent's attic Johnny finds many treasures, but where is the wooden horse that he remembers so well?

Minor’s original art from The Magical Christmas Horse is the undoubted highlight of the exhibition. Their vibrancy draws you in, and you immediately feel in the holiday spirit of old.

The festive show also features whimsical displays of spectacular toy horses of all shapes and sizes from the collection of the Gunn Museum and local residents.

Under the artistic direction of designer Chris Zaima and the collaboration of John Pitts, the former scenic artist at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, The Magical Christmas Horse captures the holiday spirit for children of all ages, and reignites the inner child in us all.

Higgins is of course an author of international renown having sold over one hundred million copies of her books in the United States alone.   Minor is an award winning illustrator and amongst his many accomplishments his work can be found in the Library of Congress.   He lives in Washington, CT.
