Hotel Review, Warren, Connecticut
By Mark B. Oliver | June 05, 2012
Overlooking spectacular Lake Waramaug, the Hopkins Inn is a charming oasis in the heart of Connecticut.
Nestled in the Berkshire foothills since 1847, the inn had such a lasting impact on a novelist friend of mine, that he incorporated it into his next book as the destination for a retired Italian couple’s second honeymoon. It really is that good.
Innkeepers, Beth & Franz Schober have run the establishment for nearly thirty five years, and their son Toby Fossland, who grew up at the inn, joined them full time in 1991.
Too often historic hotels, inns and B&B’s are updated to reflect modern designs and in doing so, lose all of their inherent charm. Not so with Hopkins which offers first rate accommodation, at reasonable prices.
The first thing you notice when you pull up to the inn is the giant horse chestnut tree in the courtyard. This ancient wonder is truly spectacular, and offers welcome shade to those dining on the flagstone terrace under the hot New England sun.
The restaurant which reopens on March 30th, 2012, offers contemporary Austrian cuisine (booking is recommended, as the first rate food is well known locally), reflecting Franz’s heritage. The wait staff, are dressed in traditional Austrian garments, and are always friendly, professional and attentive.
In addition to the wondrous lake views, guests have access to Lake Waramaug at the Hopkins Inn beach, just a few short steps from the inn.
Adirondack chairs on the lawn provide a perfect place to relax, unwind, read or simply soak up the sun and views. The lawn abuts the sandy beach for those that want to take a dip.
The Tavern Room is another place to relax and unwind, and in the fall and winter, a roaring log fire provides a warm, intimate atmosphere.
The inn has eleven quaint, air-conditioned guest rooms, which are simply but perfectly decorated to reflect the old world charm of the inn. Tasteful floral prints and antique furniture abound. There are also two apartments available for lodging. While the inn is open all year, the restaurant closes in the winter months, but guests still receive (a delicious) cold continental breakfast.
Whether it is for a romantic getaway, or somewhere to meet friends and family lunch or dinner, the charming Hopkins Inn cannot be bettered.
