Restaurant Review - Washington Depot, Connecticut
By Mark B. Oliver | September 07, 2011
The Pantry is an ideal place to pick up tasty additions for your picnic, have lunch, delight on devilishly good baked goods or pick up a knickknack for the kitchen.
Located in Washington Depot, Connecticut, The Pantry offers amazingly fresh hearty fare which is available to go or eat in their cozy indoor dining area.
The lunch menu is substantial, from hearty sandwiches ($12.50 - $13.50) to regular main courses such as Lamb and Local Organic Butternut Squash Stew, served with Yukon Gold Mash and Green Salad ($19.95). The Apricot Almond Chicken Salad over a Green Salad ($16.95) was also very popular.
Their desserts are truly decadent - the Strawberry and Rhubarb Pie being a particular favorite with its melt-in-your-mouth pastry and vibrant flavor. The Caramel Pecan Tart is another delight and a cookie or two always seem to hit the spot. A whole pie costs $26, plus a $6 refundable deposit on the Pyrex dish (no tin foil here).
All of the food is cooked fresh on the premises, and items (such as the pies) can be ordered in advance if you are dining at home, or want to take a home baked dessert to a friend but lack the time (or skill) to bake it yourself.
The Pantry is the kind of restaurant that is increasingly hard to find, delicious food, freshly made, with fun, attentive, knowledgeable staff. Local produce such as jams, chutneys, marinades and chocolate are also available to purchase. Very highly recommended.
